Guide to choosing a pool cue: tips and tricks

How to choose the pool cue that best suits your needs

The game of billiards is a widespread game in Europe and around the world, practiced both at amateur and competitive level. There are many versions of billiards, with different regulations and equipment, but all variants have some elements in common: they require a table, balls and a cue. The splint is one of the most important tools because it directly affects the performance and technique of the game. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, to play at your best you will need to choose the right cue.

But what are the aspects to consider to choose the best splint? Here are some helpful tips and tricks to help you find the perfect pool cue for you.

How’s a pool cue made?

Pool cues are traditionally made of wood, the most used material in the past, but can also be made from other materials (such as splints with a wooden handle and carbon tip). Their shape is cylindrical and the size and weight vary depending on the specialty of billiards that you want to play, for example pool, carambola or snooker. Professional pool players often have custom cues, which are tailor-made for them. These splints can have a high cost, but for professional players they are an important investment. To play pool, in fact, the choice of the cue is as important as that of the table

In general a splint consists of 3 parts:

  • handle
  • body ("shaft" ), which starts from where the kick ends up to the tip;
  • tip, that is a piece of metal on which the leather is mounted.

Pool cues can consist of a single piece, two pieces (with the joint in the middle for pool cues or 3/4 from the tip like most snooker cues), or three or more pieces (usually the cheapest).

How to choose the pool cue?

If you are not sure which pool cue to choose, there are some tips that can help you decide. First, you will need to consider the material with which the splint is made. Wooden billiard cue are generally considered the best for billiards players, as they offer a more natural feeling. Secondly, you will need to verify the weight of the cue: using low-quality, too light or, conversely, too heavy pool cues, can affect the performance of the game and make you disadvantaged compared to your rival. To facilitate transport you can choose splints divisible into two or three parts, which ensure a smaller footprint.

Another important aspect to consider is the type of use, professional or amateur. Experienced players and professionals must choose products of the highest quality, reliable and robust, to be able to make shots accurately and with maximum effectiveness. If you are a beginner or want to play billiards at the material level you can opt instead for pool cues with a good value for money, but always of a good level.

To choose the most suitable pool cue you will have to consider, finally, the type of game and use: for American billiards for example (which involves the use of larger balls), you will have to buy a cue with a 13 mm tip. On the contrary, for specialties where smaller balls are used you can choose sticks with a small tip.
